Boys & Girl's Learn to Earn
Newman St. in Hackensack was all abuzz with young
entrepreneur hopefuls who came out on Saturday, July 27th to get a
taste of what it takes to own their own businesses during the 1st Annual
Wealth Creation Summer Block Party hosted by the Boys & Girls Club of
Lodi / Hackensack.
Along with the Hackensack Housing Authority and Bergen
Community Business Development Center, the party was open to the public from 12
to 6 p.m. and was full of entertainment, music, dance, food and more but the
purpose of the event was to introduce the world of entrepreneurship and inspire
youths to ‘learn the value of a dollar’.
“We are inspiring the young people to tap into their natural
abilities and to know that they have whatever it takes to create whatever it is
in their lives.” Event coordinator Kelechi Njoku remarked.
Special recognition was paid to long time volunteer Sonia
Verdade for her commitment to the youth. “It feels good when you know you’re
doing something well for a great community.” Verdade humbly stated.
As DJ Pinnacle’s spins thundered through the air drawing the
neighbors to the block, local officials were given a tour of the Hackensack facility that
includes a gymnasium and computer lab. “It’s exciting to see the continued
progress we’re making with the Boys & Girls Clubs and their commitment to Hackensack .” Deputy Mayor
Cathy Canestrino stated. “Investing in our children is investing in our future
and I think they’re doing a great job and I congratulate them.”
Throughout the day the business of business was shared by
local companies such as ConnectOneBank, Aaron’s and realator Wanda Simmons who
all took a little time to answer any questions the youth may have had. Business
Eleven year old restaurateur wanna-be James Spates took the
opportunity to get into the grind by baking four pans of yummy cupcakes to sell
at the event. With his mother Monique by his side, he baked well into the
night.
“This was a fun idea. I want to open a restaurant one day.”
He stated.
Funds raised during the block party will go toward
supporting their causes. The Boys & Girls Clubs has always been a positive
vehicle for youths across America
and it endeavors to continue their heritage. It has not only provided an avenue
to stir up the creative and academic gifts of youth but it also has become a safe haven and support system for those seeking a constructive refuge.
Dimitri Cox has been a member of the club and its older teen division the Keystones a/k/a the Dream Team since 2010 and dubs it his first home. “They have supported me since day one despite me getting into trouble or whatever.” He commended.
Through their many community service projects, the Keystones have become an important vine in the club. For more information on how to support the Lodi/Hackensack Boys & Girls Club, visit http://bgcoflodi.org.
