Forty years ago, the Teaneck Terpsichoreans formerly known as the Teaneck Modern Dance Clubbegan as a small after school dance club for high school students in 1971 but today, it has grown into a legacy of inspiration in the community of Teaneck and beyond.
Through the vision of founder & retired Teaneck High School physical education and health teacher Cheryl Miller-Porter, the group, now known simply as the “Terpsys” was created to be a positive outlet for those who wanted to learn dance in its many forms. From African, hip-hop, modern to jazz, tap and ballet, everyone has found a home in the Terpsys since day one.
Starting in October and concluding with a season ending showcase in February - that now includes a tribute to the late Michael Jackson - and an annual tour of the south, these students from all ages, backgrounds, shapes & sizes have made an extraordinary name for themselves in the dance community. They have grown into a professional outlet and are highly sought after to perform in many venues.
Since the club’s inception, the self-supporting ensemble has entertained a wide audience, displaying the self confidence and discipline of its performers and the love from its leader.
Even as their popularity grew, however, Miller-Porter didn’t let it swell hers or the student’s heads. She kept her priorities in check always putting education first. She was adamant when it came to academics. Students knew that when it was report card time, she would be standing in the hallways waiting to see their grades. If they weren’t up to par, they would be placed on probation.
The Terpsys celebrated their 40th Anniversary during the weekend of February 19, 2011 with three memorable performances – Saturday eve, Feb. 19th in the Helen B. Hill Auditorium at the Teaneck High School & Sunday, Feb. 20 at 3 and 8 p.m. at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood. All three shows were sold out with performances showcasing over 80 past and present members. “I really could not have survived 40 years without a great staff. It’s a great feeling to have the staff that I have.” She stated.
Many of the students who’ve passed through the ensemble have gone on to become professionals but have stayed connected either by volunteering as staff, mentors, choreographers and dancers and/or through their own children’s participation.
“Being a Terpsy has helped me to be a more confident and well-rounded adult which is what I hope my children will develop into as well.” Junior Terpsys Co-ordinator Natalie Cureton stated.
“It’s a place to be yourself and follow your passion.” Alumni Choreographer Leanna Barnes chimed.

2012 Whodunnit Theatre
WHODUNNIT PHOTOS TAKEN BY SHANTECA OLIVACCE PHOTOGRAPHY A biblical mystery unfolded on Saturday afternoon, March 24, 2012 at the Community Baptist Church of Englewood, NJ as the Righteous Acts Drama Ministry & the Children Before Christ Ministry II presented their first interactive theatre experience called the Whodunnit Theatre.
Taken from the Angela Lansbury type format, a collection of nine physical and poetic clues were presented to the audience by Detective Bible Study a/k/a Det. B.S. played by special guest Julian A. Moore to help get the answers to who, what, when and where those clues referred to in the Bible. As the theme of the Pink Panther danced in the background, the Detective was on the job! In appreciation for their help, he gave his informants a gift with every correct answer.
His imagination ran wild as he pieced together the clues to come up with past and present scenarios that gave him something to consider. Nine sketches were presented for that purpose. The complete program in order of appearance included, the CBC Music Ministry featuring Bro. Anthony Miller, Bro. Scyon Lawrence and Bro. Seidel Harris, III.

Fields, Tanya Maryong (special guest), Dawna Pazant, Sonja R. Price (special guest), Jennie Steward & Toni Goode – Sumler.

Additional cast and crew included Eddie Love, Louise Bethune & Juliann Weston as the Whodunnit Narrators, Stage Manager Brenda Naylor, Jabari Branch Back stage /Tech support, Lighting, Sound & Visual Aid Support provided by The CBC Multi-Media Ministry and special effects by Anthony Miller. Directing for the first time brought a balance of joy and challenges to the creative team. The experience was eye opening and exhilarating after seeing the finished product.
“I had a ball! It was good and challenging. I got to see exactly what happens on the back end of it vs. performing.” expressed Sandra Anderson. “To see it all unfold was great. I would definitely do it again.”
The magnitude of this type of production was made possible not only by the creative staff, actors and crew members, but also the efforts of the church administrative staff. Giving credit where credit is due, firstly to our Father in Heaven for lending us His awesome creative mind and the stirring up of gifts. Thank you, Jesus!
To the Rev. Dr. Lester W. Taylor, Sr. Pastor who has kept an open mind to the ministry through drama since day one. To the Rev. On Saturday, September 20, 2008, JWP had the pleasure of presenting a 1/2 hour drama based on five characters in the bible at the Union Baptist Church in Passaic, NJ. The colorful cast included Sandra Anderson as Queen Vashti, entertainer Louise Bethune as Queen Herodias, John Furlonge as Uncle Mordecai, Brielle Butts as The Servant and J. Weston as Queen Esther and Salome. Completing this off the wall piece were Julian A. Moore providing the voice overs for King Xerxes & John The Baptist along with Francella Chisholm as Narrator and music arrangements by Trayce R. Evans of Music By Design Productions. .
The vignettes depicted hypothetical conversations with biblical queens and their decisions that placed them either in a positive light or infamy. The purpose of the piece was to challenge today's woman to look inside of herself and examine her place of authority and her decisions attached to it.
It is also an ode to those who do not need a crown be a queen. The single mothers who some how find the strength to survive; the community workers and care givers that go beyond their homes and speak for those who can not, the women who decide to fight for their country in a plethora of ways, etc. Queens can be found in all walks of life.
The Hospitality Ministry of Union Baptist Church graciously opened their hearts and minds to this off-centered performance. Un-traditional to what the the Black Christian community views as a 'gospel play', people caught on to the message.

Hackensack PAL Tries New Program
In the summer of 2008, the Hackensack Police Athletic League under the leadership
of Sensei Larry Barr, introduced a performance arts unit to its roster of
activities and on Saturday afternoon, June 14 the program ended with an
original drama and dance performance of “The Wolves Who Wanted Respect”. presented by the group.
Ms. Weston thanks all of the children who participated in
the program for their tenacity and energy and the willingness of their parents,
Mr. Barr and Mr. Sorce to try something new.
For more information about upcoming programs, contact PAL at (201) 342-5900.
With a playful hip hop twist on some of our favorite fairy
tale characters, the intimate show featured Andrew Brown as Big Bad Wolf, Jalen
Nouques as Biggie Wolf, Ashley Sosa as Breezy Wolf, Christina Medina as Diva
Wolf, Crystal Ocasio as Missy Wolf, Leah Staffin as “Creamy” Piglet, Jennifer
Sosa as “Suga” Piglet, Justine Thompson as “Butter Brown Piglet”, Samantha
Lopez as “Spicee” Piglet the Nosey Neighbor, Briana Palmore as ‘Lil Red, Kaelyn
Finney as Big Red, Deja Sims as Flava Red and Kira Finney as the Mediator. The
action took place inside of the gym’s boxing ring enhancing the story’s drama.
The program, under the tutelage of writer/director Juliann
“Jewelz” Weston, ran twice a week for two hours each session. The children ages
7 to 15 learned basic acting and quickly picked up three dance routines
choreographed by dancers Janelle Duckett and Ashley Barnes both of Teaneck
with additional support from Jennifer Sosa and Deja Sims for the finale.
“The whole idea of a performing arts program at PAL was
initiated to attract kids who are not into sports but want something of their
own.” Stated Weston.
This new element is the first of its kind in the illustrious
history of the organization. Founded over 15 years ago by Mike Mordega and
currently run by President Sandy Sorce both of whom were a part of the audience,
the gym has become a main attraction for boxing and karate hopefuls in the
area. In addition, PAL also offers offsite basketball and bowling.
Barr, who serves as the new vice president and karate
teacher, will continue to work diligently to encourage more eclectic programs
to suit all children.
He stated, “The kids worked very hard and they enjoyed what
they were doing and it showed in their performance.”
“This is a pioneer program and because of the enthusiasm, it
is going to be an on-going program.” He continued.
