Nine women of color from all ages, backgrounds and disciplines were honored by WBLS’ Café Mocha Radio for their special contributions to the community at large on Saturday, June 21st at the NJ Performance Arts Center Newark, NJ.
The Salute Her: Superwomen Making a Difference Brunch and Award Ceremony was the brainchild of creator and executive producer of the Café Mocha Radio Show Sheila Eldridge who wanted to pay tribute to radio broadcaster D. Cherie, publicist Simone Smalls, Sister 2 Sister magazine founder Jamie Foster Brown, author, blogger & Blood Sweat and Heels star Demetria Lucas, international journalist Lola Ogunnaike, children’s advocate Evelyn Mejil, Ilyasah Shabazz daughter of Malcolm X, Real Housewives of Atlanta star and model Cynthia Bailey and legendary singer Gloria Gaynor for their ‘accomplishments and contributions’ who ‘personify our vision to inspire a network of change’.
Hosts actress Nicole Ari Parker and Angelique Perrin of the Café Mocha Radio Show lead the festive and empowering event with laughter and class. Family members, industry friends and community leaders proudly cheered on each honoree as they accepted their accolades. Guests were also treated to a special serenade by the “velvet teddy bear” American Idol winner Ruben Studdard.
